Short Thoughts…
Gemini season brings to mind the many “hero twin” stories of world mythology. Generally one of the twins is considered “light” and the other “dark”. Often, they’re twin brothers and one is killed by the other.
Today we look at Romulus and Remus who are credited for being the legendary founders of Rome and the builders of its first wall. In fact, the city of Rome is named after Romulus, the dark twin who would eventually kill his brother.
In their most well known imagery, a she-wolf nurses and shelters the twins after being abandoned and left to die in the wild.

Johfra Bosschart’s rendition of Taurus
The goddess on the white bull is no doubt an expression of Venus, the planet which rules the sign. The star above her head appears to be emblematic of her planet which is also known as the Morning Star and Evening Star. She holds a flame which is reminiscent of Vesta and her Vestal Virgins, the guardians of the eternal flame of Rome. If you squint and look closely you’ll notice a familiar figure to the left: The High Priestess from the Rider-Waite deck. In the sky you'll see Cupid (the son of Venus and Mars) flying with doves. Down below, the warrior that appears in Bosschart’s Aries painting is off-duty and enjoying time with his two children. Interestingly enough, Mars (The God of War) is the father of the hero twins Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome. Could this be the inspiration for what appears to be twin boys?
