Gematria

An ancient occult practice of the alphabet and words, through number values and numerology.

Gematria - a cryptograph in the form of a word whose letters have the numerical values of a word taken as the hidden meaning.
— Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Gematria Explained

Much like many occulted practices, Gematria has a mystique to it. You can even look up several different definitions, etymology, linguistic history of the word and you will yield different results, so the even the word describing the practice (Gematria) itself has a mystique to it open to interpretation. To me, Gematria is common sense, a=1, b=2, c=3… but I can understand why some find themselves hesitant about these kinds of things, it reveals the matrix, it can take of layers of veils, or even if or make a closed mind feel really closed in. I want to help ease some that distance or skepticism, or make it less icky to explore what we can all learn from a better understanding of occulted mathematics, letters and words.

Everything in reality can be “summed up” (pun intended) to mathematics, words and language have a lot to do with creating reality, words have spellings, “how do you “spell” that word?”. Words are spells and that’s not necessarily a negative connotation, it just provides clues that we can benefit when we are mindful about what and how are we speaking. Gematria can give insight into how certain words carry certain energy, based on their numerical value.

There are many uses for gematria, like divination, exploration, mathematics, word play, spell casting, or understanding yourself better. But before we jump ahead, let’s start with the basics. I want to do my best job to show you some of the different uses of the practice in the simplest way possible, so that you have a foundation of understanding, that you can look it and know what’s going on, more than just typing in a word and hitting the “find matches” on the first Gematria website you googled.

Are you familiar with the board game Scrabble? That’s always what I use as the simplest example of what Gematria is, because, much like the game Scrabble, there is a point score to each letter that add up to a point score for the entire word.

Scrabble is using a point system based on the commonality and occurrence of each letter, but gematria in it’s own respect, is using numerical sequences to create values added to each letter, these are called ciphers. There are simple ciphers, and more complex ciphers, all following a mathematical or geometrical sequence.

Gematria is derived from other languages, it’s historically documented that gematria was used in Greek, Hebrew, Sumerian, and Chaldean, all examples of ancient cultures using the art form of Gematria. We will be focusing mostly on using Gematria based on the English language, but there are ciphers used that convert the english alphabet to other languages and ciphers, which lands different numerical results when using gematria.

Let’s start with English…

When you learn to practice Numerology, one thing that surprises some people thinking they are just going to learn about numbers, is the importance of applying Numerology to words, more specifically our names. In numerology, there is reduction by addition. For example, 13=4 Because 1+3=4. Simply put, numerology is trying to find the simplest reduced number from a larger number or a sequence of numbers. In Gematria, there is less focus on reducing the numerical values, but understanding the numerical values as a whole. This is why the Pythagorean Alphabet which is the “Numerology” cipher only uses a single digit number sequence. The letter “J” is the 10th letter, but 1+0=1, so “J”=1, the single digit sequence resets at 10 back to 1, 11 is (1+1=2), 12 is (1+2=3), 13=4, so on and so forth.

The English Reduction Cipher in Gematria is derived from and the same as the Pythagorean Alphabet.

When using Numerology, take a name like “John” J=1, O=6, H=8, N=5, 1+6+8+5=20, (2+0)=2 So John in Numerology would equal 2 because you are looking for the reduction number. But in gematria, you wouldn’t reduce the result, in gematria, John = 20 in the english reduction cipher.

Here we have the standard English Ordinal Gematria Cipher beside the English reduction cipher. When you compare the two ciphers, you can notice how they are similar, the reductions are represented of the same numbers, even tho it is only 1 through 9, it is also following the same sequence of 1 to 26, just reducing the double digit numbers to single digits.

When using gematria, English reduction will yield overlapping and similar results, due to the lower number values of the words, the probability of word values landing between specific values are higher, this is also most likely to happen in ciphers where the values of each letter are lower numbers, the same goes, the higher the value of each letter in a cipher will yield a higher variety and more specific codes and results.

Notice how 7+4=11, 1+1=2. and 3+8=11 1+1=2. Both Ciphers will yield the same numerology for the same word.

English Ordinal

English ordinal seems to make the most sense as far a numerical sequence, A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, … X = 24, Y = 25, Z = 26.

A-Z, 1-26. Simple to understand. The numerical order of the alphabet is a fixed order, A is always the 1st letter, Z is always the 26th letter. When looking at numbers, you can also now understand that 26 is associated with the letter Z, or if you notice a specific M, you an also conclude it could be representing the number 13, and with numerology, you can also understand Z is associated with 8(2+6) or M as 4 (1+3).

When starting out using gematria, English Ordinal and English Reduction ciphers are a great place to start to grasp an understanding of how the numbers and the alphabet work hand in hand with one another.

“Gematrix.org” seems to be a common place for a lot of people to start out or to go to for gematria calculations and matches. The names of the ciphers can change website to website, so just get comfortable with you refer to as a cipher, and just know that it may have a different name. Let’s talk about the Ciphers on that site.

When you search in Gematrix, you will get a top page of results, and a bottom page of results. The top part of the section is the latin/hebrew cipher matches, the bottom section is both the English and Sumerian Ciphers. I will explain why English and Sumerian will yield the same matches, but first let’s start with the Latin Cipher.

Below are some charts so how the Hebrew letters convert to english

Here we have the Latin Cipher. When you look at the images, you can see how the different letters convert into each language. If you’re just trying to do some very barebones gematria, knowing this isn’t as relevant, but also, understanding that gematria came from ancient languages and the practice has it’s place in hebrew culture. Because of the history and importance of it, the Latin/Jewish/Hebrew?Agrippa Cipher can very important when searching gematria, adding to your research, or compiling your conspiracy poster board with red thread.

Sumerian Cipher

I’m not here to give you a lecture on Sumerian culture and history this moment, but we are going to look at even some simple word play. I group the Sumerians with other cultures like Phoenicians, civilizations that emphasized on linguistics. it’s in their name. Sum - Air - E - IN - I read that word as the Sum of the Air (E)nergy. Air is the words and the language, and why I also can group the Phoenicians in with the same group is the Phone - Etics/ Phone-Ethics Another one would be Babylon, because after all this is the realm where we “babble on”. I don’t to get too deep into my word play quite yet, but as you can see, based on my own personal etymological understanding of how words are formed, I can only assume that word play has been around and used for historical names more than we believe, another topic for another day.

Let’s break down the Sumerian Cipher.

Simply put, the English Sumerian cipher is just English Ordinal with each letter multiplied by six.

Any number divisible by 6 will on technicality match with a Sumerian cipher

Multiplying the letters by six has more significant meaning other that just a random number out of a hat. Andwe are talking about magic after all…

To hex something, some interpret that to mean to curse something, I perceive it as to “cast” something, or to use intent and action to create a result.

To hex something in neo-pagan/witchcraft communities refers to the binding of a spell with the intent of preventing any other outside interference, which really correlates with the properties of the number six. In german “Hexen” means witch.

A hexagon is a six sided shape, it’s can made up of many different shapes and angles and is one of the most important shapes in sacred geometry.

The Six, if we were to look at 3-6-9 briefly… 3 is the energy, the thought, the spark, 6 is the harmony and structure for which that energy plays out in reality, and 9 is in which that energy transfers back to either, or the domino affect of the 3, and the 6, equaling 9.

6 represents harmony, community, balance and structure. When you get into the mathematics of your spell casting, and by spell casting, I also literally mean speaking and communicating (spelllings), you can play around with words and numbers that are divisible by or multiples of 6.

I would conclude that the Sumerian cipher is good to use when you understand what the alpha-numericals multiplied by 6 truly means. The sumerian number totals are also going to look and feel more harmonious, and observing those numbers might help in your realization the power of the number 6.

NUMERICAL SEQUENCES

Numerical sequences are another way to implement codes. These are mathematically proven numerical sequences with their values coinciding with each letter. This will yield very unique results, with far less matches and relatable words, and a good way to help with the innerstandings and magic of numbers. You can look a number or a code, and understand it from both a numerological, and mathematical perspective, and both work in conjunction with each other, and factor in to this. When looking at an individual number, we will refer to these NUMBER PROPERTIES.

NUMBER PROPERTIES

Number properties are kind of like extra hidden clues to the number you are decoding or understanding. The common ones are Prime numbers, Triangular Numbers, Star Numbers, Square Numbers, and the Fibonacci sequence. These are mathematical numerical sequences that are consistent variables.

When using your preferred gematria website, they’ll either have a page dedicated to explaining the ciphers and the number properties, or they may have the option for you to click on the number, and it will give you a little chart, and the chart will say if the number you are searching is a number in one the numerical sequences.

For example, You search a word, that word equals 137. You can look more into the number 137 and it’s number properties. You find out 137 is a PRIME number. And because prime numbers will always be in the same order, You will find out, 137 is the 33rd Prime Number. So now you know that when you are decoding something, and the number shows up as 137, you can also than connect that to the number 33 because 137 will forever be the 33rd prime number.
